Urge your candidate to commit to our three point pledge and make London a better place for everyone!
Dear Candidate,
We urge you to fix our democracy and pledge to;
- Pressure the Cabinet Office to release more funding for electoral services in London.
- Call for the creation of an independent London wide forum on democratic engagement.
- Publically support a website so people can check their voter registration status.
Ben & Jerry's and HOPE not hate are calling on the London Mayoral candidates to take action for the capital's democracy. We've sent open letters to all Mayoral candidates, including Zac Goldsmith and Sadiq Khan, to highlight the scale of the democratic crisis facing the capital. We are urging them to commit to a three point pledge to make London a better place for everyone.
- Pressure the Cabinet Office to release more funding for the electoral services in London
London has the largest transient population in the country, due to the high proportion of people living in privately rented accommodation and the huge student community. These are both groups who are more at risk of not being registered to vote, and the situation is only being made worse by underfunded and understaffed electoral services! So we are calling on the new Mayor to put pressure on the Cabinet Office to provide funding for these services. - Call for the creation of an independent London wide forum on democratic engagement
Some London councils have been highly successful in encouraging young people, private renters and ethnic minority groups to participate in democracy. We could see far greater numbers of those registered to vote if we share knowledge and develop a strategy to engage all in the democratic process, and an independent London wide forum of electoral services and civil society groups would facilitate just this! - Publically support a website enabling people to check their voter registration status
Research shows that 44% of people wrongly believe that they are registered to vote, and that it can take up to 45 minutes to get this information when calling a local electoral service! This is just why we are calling on the London mayor to support the creation of a website where individuals can check their voter registration status.
